See How to boost your Phone speed (Part 2) with and without Applications
There are a couple of reasons your smartphone could be running slowly, which can hinder your phone usage. Here are some of the major reasons behind a smartphone being slow (in no particular order);
- Low device specification: insufficient RAM, Poor processor speed...
- Too many background activities
- Too many applications installed
- Installation of very particularly heavy and tasking apps
- Insufficient storage memory (full sdcard or internal memory)
- Long history of phone use without maintenance
What can I do to increase the Speed and performance of my Droid Phone?
If your phone was shipped in with low hardware specifications, there's fairly little you can do to get speed. Do not be discouraged however, because with or without root, these steps can go a long way in getting a better performance from you device.
Without root:
- Before you install any application, be sure its gonna be useful to you for a while. this is necessary because the more installations and un-installations you do, the more junk files your phone keeps (picture it as taking a bite from as many as 15 different kinds of cake), which may contribute directly or indirectly to poor phone performance.
- Know your device's capacity and capabilities and don't go forcing heavy applications on it. It is very important to read app developers' notes before installing any application, this will tell you whether the app you intend installing is compatible with your phone or not. Also read users' reviews, then you will know what devices are experiencing issues with the app.
- keep your Phone storage clean: As often as possible, manage your file by yourself and don't just watch applications dump files anywhere and everywhere in your phone. Get a good file manager, delete unnecessary files and maintain a generally neat arrangement of files.
- Endeavor to close certain apps as soon as you are done using them (apps like your 'Browser'), they consume a lot of resources and results in slower performance (even though apps running in the background consumes less memory, properly exited apps consume almost no memory at all)
- Finally, you may get an application that regularly clears your cache partition and a task manager that regularly frees up vital resources by closing unwanted processes.
With Root
There are a few ways to improve performance and Speed on a rooted phone (Here is more on ROOTING). Here you have some of them:
- Doing a complete factory reset on a rooted phone is probably the best way to speed it up. Emphasis on ROOT, because, it is the only way to safely backup your applications, application data and almost any other thing before a factory reset is done (remember to keep your Backup safe somewhere). Here you lose nothing except the 'junk log slowing your boat down'. Your phone feels completely new after a complete factory reset (I personally love restoring my phone to factory state-that I do it almost every month, but I still have hundreds of text messages that dates back to Feb 2012).
- Overclocking: With this you can get your phone to perform a lot better and its so easy to do (See this to know more about overclocking). Note: Not all processors can be overclocked.
- Extending your RAM: This means that if your phone was shipped with 512 Mb of RAM, you can use an external storage (SdCard) as an extension to get -let us say- 1 Gb RAM. The concept is interesting and can help boost your phone speed a whole lot.
It is possible to carry out a backup on non-rooted phone, however, it is limited as you cannot backup system-level files like application data...
