How to Unlock Motorola E 2nd Gen for GSM use (Android 5.0.2)

The Motorola Moto E 2nd Generation Verizon variant is a super budget smartphone running on android 5.0.2 by default.
Because this is a Verizon branded phone (CDMA network), using the device with GSM operator networks is not activated by default. Unlocking it for GSM use should be easy.

The Moto E has a lot of variants, if yours is model XT1528 then follow the steps below

Running Stock Android 5.0.2

1.       Insert your desired GSM SIM and Power your device (a notification should say “SIM not Verizon”, just ignore)

2.       If you have WiFi, set up your Google account and download “Network” or “4G switcher” app from the play store. Alternatively, request a friend download and share either of the above apps with you through Bluetooth.

3.       Go to setting--More--Cellular networks, put your phone in Airplane mode by dragging down notification and clicking ‘Airplane mode’.

4.       Minimize current task and Launch the Network app, scroll down a bit to see “Set preferred Network type”

5.       Choose “LTE/GSM auto (PRL)” and switch back to settings task.

6.       Click “Preferred network type” and select 2G or 3G.(Check that there is a new option named “Network operators”, if not seen then repeat steps 3,4 and 5)

7.       Turn off Airplane mode and Reboot your Phone if no Network Signal.

8.       There, your Moto E is now unlocked

NOTE: The above method should work for most variants that are not Factory unlocked but running Android 5.0.2 stock

However if your Moto E is running on Android 5.1 above, then USE THIS METHOD FOR GSM UNLOCK
